Background of the study
Alcohol consumption is a significant public health concern that has been closely linked to the development of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as liver disease, cardiovascular complications, and certain cancers. In Onitsha North Local Government Area, Anambra State, cultural practices and social norms often contribute to high levels of alcohol intake, thereby elevating the risk of NCDs among residents (Okoro, 2023). Recent research underscores that excessive alcohol consumption not only increases the burden of chronic illnesses but also strains local healthcare systems due to increased hospitalization and treatment costs (Chukwu, 2024). The study explores how alcohol consumption patterns correlate with the prevalence of NCDs and assesses the extent to which lifestyle modifications and public health interventions can mitigate these effects (Amadi, 2025). Understanding the link between alcohol use and chronic disease is critical for designing targeted health education programs and policy interventions aimed at reducing alcohol-related harm in the community.
Statement of the problem
In Onitsha North, high levels of alcohol consumption have been implicated in the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases. The situation is exacerbated by limited public awareness, inadequate regulatory frameworks, and insufficient healthcare resources to manage chronic conditions. The adverse health outcomes associated with excessive alcohol use pose a serious challenge to community well-being and the efficiency of local health services. Addressing this issue requires a thorough investigation of the relationship between alcohol consumption and NCDs (Okoro, 2023; Amadi, 2025).
Objectives of the study:
To investigate the relationship between alcohol consumption and non-communicable diseases.
To identify the socio-cultural factors that promote alcohol use.
To recommend public health interventions to reduce alcohol-related health risks.
Research questions:
How does alcohol consumption influence the prevalence of non-communicable diseases in Onitsha North?
What socio-cultural factors contribute to high alcohol consumption levels?
What interventions can effectively reduce alcohol-related health risks?
Research Hypotheses:
Higher levels of alcohol consumption are associated with an increased prevalence of NCDs.
Socio-cultural factors significantly influence alcohol consumption behaviors.
Public health interventions can reduce the burden of alcohol-related non-communicable diseases.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the impact of alcohol consumption on non-communicable diseases, providing essential data to inform health policy and intervention strategies. The findings will help in developing targeted programs to reduce alcohol-related health risks in Onitsha North (Okoro, 2023; Chukwu, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study focuses solely on the influence of alcohol consumption on non-communicable diseases in Onitsha North Local Government Area, considering local consumption patterns and health impacts.
Definitions of terms:
Alcohol Consumption: The intake of alcoholic beverages.
Non-communicable Diseases: Chronic diseases that are not passed from person to person.
Public Health Intervention: Actions designed to improve health outcomes within a community.
